The International Organization for Standardization created a seven layer reference model known as the OSI model. This model is a layered approach to describing a standard way to show how data flows on a computer network. Before the OSI model, a team of scientists from DARPA were using a model based on a specific protocol suite called TCP/IP. The TCP/IP model is still widely used today mainly because TCP/ip has become the accepted universal standard of for the Internet.
